- Roy was World War II Casulty: P-51 Mustang Fighter Pilot Lake Balaton, Hungary.
Roy W. Smith, 22, son of William H. and Elizabeth N. (nee VanOeveren) Smith, 720 E. 128th Street, was killed over Lake Balaton, Hungary on July 27, 1944. 1Lt. Smith was piloting his Mustang fighter plane on a bomber escort mission to Budapest when killed. He was a graduate of Cleveland Heights High School and attended Ohio Wesleyan University before enlisting in February 1943. A sister, Arleen Lois, also survived him. Services were held at Calvary Reformed Church, 1920 W. 65th Street.
1Lt. Smith is interred in Knollwood Cemetery.
